booty shakin earth quakin

oona:  i wanted to make a boxy dress, like a piece of art.

ruggy: you succeeded.

but doesn't everyone like to add ten extra inches of width to their side view?

two canceled flights, three earthquakes, one missed burdastyle book launch party, countless missed blogger meetups, and two bad airport sandwiches later, i now see the err of my ways on this dress.  photo credit goes to mama ruggy, who loved the dress, and accessory credit goes to sis-in-law, whose birthday gifted moma necklace is the saving grace of this outfit.  i love this necklace so much, apparently i felt the need to create a dress that would flatter it over me.

i used burdastyle member pixielink's free batwing top for my trickery.  please don't let my results stop you from downloading it right this minute.  this purple doubleknit jersey was destined for two parties, but made it only to a museum opening.  it missed the book launch.  (see: canceled flights.  have you seen the photos from that shindig?   i gnash my teeth in jealousy.)

lumpy booty is also an important design feature.

i was going to ask your opinions on this dress sack, but after 20 minutes of cropping these photos i have my answer.  if you have to ask, does this look good on me?  you KNOW the answer.  you just don't WANT to know the answer.  this dress requires sergery.  i'm not misspelling that, it has a date with my red threaded ellie.  the red headed stepchild of my sewing menagerie.  i could go all day.

i might still be jetlagged.

  1. Are you joking!? This looks great on you! Very Pop Art. And you must tell where you scored the red tights, or I WILL steal them from you. The Burda party was less fun without you.

  2. I agree with miss Fish who commented above- I love this dress. I love the color and the shape, I think it looks comfy but also pretty expensive. I would wear it. I think it looks awesome on you.

  3. I tend to really like boxy dresses on the hanger or in photos, but once I put them on I feel like a giant, sad rectangle! I bet you can salvage this-- good luck to you and Ellie!

@Ms Fish-- I have a pair of tights just like OonaB's, and they were $4 from H&M!

  4. I love this purple - and with the tights! so awesome! :)

but i commiserate with the airport woes. flying can be such a royal pain when it gets messed up!!

  5. I think you look awesome on it alongside the fab styling. I usually dislike boxy shapes on me, with not much curves, i tend to look like a boy.

  6. I have to agree with Daughter Fish. I think that this dress looks fantastic! Sack dresses are great for keeping the focus on some lovely legs, missy. Have fun with the serger, though!

  7. I think you look smashing and have accessorized the outfit perfectly (although really, all solids? Are you feeling well?)

That being said, I know I would want the dress more fitted. I think a smidgeon of quality time with you and Elle will be just the ticket to get this exactly where you want it. :)

word verification: uncry---the sound made by a seamstress hacking with abandon at an unsatisfactory creation until it becomes absolutely perfect.

  8. I can't believe you missed the book launch! So sad for you. Your flights sound like a pain in the proverbial. Looks like it's all for the best that I didn't try to change my flights. It wouldn't have been the same without you. The styling of this dress is awesome and the photos are lovely. I'm not sure it's as bad as you think it is, but I'll bow to your better judgement!

  9. Just make it tighter! You have a great bod. Use your serger to bring it in at the side seams and blend to the armpit. I love the dolman sleeve....I was planning on making something similar to this as soon as I can go fabric shopping.

  10. I agree with Ms. Fish - I LOVE it! But if you must schedule a meeting with Ms. Ellie, I understand. I've made garments that I am completely "meh" about even if others say they look good. I need to love it if I'm going to wear it, and I'm pretty sure you are the same way, yes? Definitely LOVE the orange tights. Way to rock my favorite color! PS why all the hate on the redheaded stepchildren? We Gingers cannot help being evil to the core :) It's in our nature!

  11. honey--I think it's impossible for anything to look bad on you! That dress looks fab and I love the way you styled it! I've been missing your posts lately!!! Sorry you missed the book launch but I can send you some giant paper scissors if that would make you feel better?? xoxoxoxo

  12. You look HOTT! You can totally pull off the boxy silhouette. True, very few of us ladies attempt to make ourselves look WIDER than we are but its short enough and hits you at the right point on your legs that the proportion works and that itclearly shows you are a teenyperson wearing a voluminous top/dress. You'd also look cute if you do decide to run it in at the sideseams but I think it works beautifully as is. Your colours, as always, are gorgeous too.

I'm sorry to hear about you missing the party and your meetups... GAH!!!

  13. I like it alot. I know that Ruggy likes the defined waist so maybe that's the issue. :)

Maybe make a high waisted obi belt to go with this to please him. But I like it just the way it is.

  14. Maybe you can grow into it! Pile on the pounds, you know? More food!

But seriously, it's a great look with the tights, necklace and boots and the photos are wonderful

  15. I think you look fab anyway! Awesome colours. I'd just clinch it in with a nice wide belt :) Xoxoxx

  16. I def think you're working this dress, and the styling & photos are spot on. That said, I totes feel your pain. In theory, this sort of avant garde look is fab, but the second I try to attempt it, I feel frump-tastic. Serger cures all!

Am I sad you missed the book launch? Yes. BUT... If hadn't missed it, too, I would have been even more sad to find you MIA. Selfish? Yes.

  17. The boxy shape suits you fine! It might be nice to have a NOT form-fitting dress sometimes. It looks very comfy and I love the pairing of your tights and dress. I wish I could find some decent coloured tights in Canada!

  18. Great color combo and accessorizing. I DO think you succeeded in creating a very arty outfit, but I totally get why you're not happy with it. I'm sure you'll find a way to add some shape to it.

  19. @ miss fish: target, mais oui! little happy rolls of color for 5 bucks a pop. actually, i thought the price was a little high, but they have a great waist that doesn't give you muffin top. worth it.

@ tanit isis: i'm going to make uncry my battle cry.

@ saro: that is EXACTLY the issue!!!

@ EVERYONE: you have given it a stay of execution. for the moment. i'm going to try to eat my way into it this holiday season as urbandon suggests.

  20. It's my favorite color so that makes it AWESOME in my book always!! Though, you DO look great in it, ass (teehee) usual.

I was sooooo bummed you couldn't make it to the party. I guess we'll just have to make our own party, right? We could totally invade the Burda offices!

  21. nettie, i was so bummed too! if we invade the offices, we must bring alcohol.
